Conclusion<br />

Employment in the PMA is concentrated in the educational services, healthcare, <strong>and</strong> retail trade<br />

sectors. This is typical <strong>of</strong> downtown business districts. Overall the Atlanta economy has been<br />

more adversely affected by the current national recession than the nation as a whole. The Atlanta<br />

MSA has reported job losses <strong>of</strong> approximately 6.1 percent in 2009 versus 3.8 percent in the<br />

nation. However, there has been job growth <strong>of</strong> 2.3 percent as <strong>of</strong> March 2012.<br />

From 2002 through 2007, total MSA employment increased steadily. In 2008, total MSA<br />

employment decreased by 6.1 percent, compared to a national employment decrease <strong>of</strong> 3.8<br />

percent for the same period <strong>of</strong> study. This is a result <strong>of</strong> the economic downturn that began in late<br />
