iFsm 457 tHRougH itAl 301<br />

iFsm 457 Cyberterrorism (3)<br />

(Formerly IFSM 497C.) Prerequisite: IFSM 300. An overview<br />

of the issues surrounding cyberterrorism, including low-level<br />

threats (attacks that vandalize Web pages or launch denial<br />

of service), middle-tier threats (online fraud and industrial<br />

espionage by companies, organized crime, and nation states),<br />

and high-end threats from nation states and terrorist groups.<br />

Socioeconomic motivations and the “hacker mentality” are<br />

explored. Review also covers common network and security<br />

loopholes, the concept of social engineering and its impact on<br />

IT security, existing government regulations, and the National<br />

IT Security Plan. Students may receive credit for only one of<br />

the following courses: IFSM 457 or IFSM 497C.<br />

iFsm 461 systems Analysis and design (3)<br />

Prerequisite: IFSM 300. A study of the methods used<br />

in analyzing needs for information and in specifying<br />

requirements for an application system. Implementation of<br />

the operational system, integration of computer technology,<br />

and aspects of organizational behavior in the design support<br />

system are examined. Topics include the concept of the system<br />

life cycle, the iterative nature of the processes of analysis<br />

and design, and the methodology for developing a logical<br />

specification and physical design for an operational system.<br />

Students may receive credit for only one of the following<br />

courses: IFSM 436, IFSM 460, or IFSM 461.<br />

Courses in Italian (designated ITAL) may be applied as<br />

appropriate, for example, toward:<br />

G the general education requirements in the arts and<br />

humanities;<br />

G a major or minor in humanities;<br />

G a Foreign Language Area Studies Certificate; and<br />

itAl 111 Elementary italian i (3)<br />

A basic foundation in listening, speaking, reading, and<br />

writing in Italian. Italian culture, history, current events, and<br />

geography provide the context for instruction in grammatical<br />

structures, vocabulary, pronunciation, and writing. Focus is<br />

on acquiring the skills necessary to communicate with native<br />

Italian speakers orally and on writing at an elementary level.<br />

itAl 112 Elementary italian ii (3)<br />

Prerequisite: ITAL 111. A continuation of the development<br />

of basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in<br />

Italian. Italian culture, history, current events, and geography<br />

provide the context for instruction in grammatical structures,<br />

vocabulary, pronunciation, and writing. Focus is on acquiring<br />

the skills necessary to communicate with native Italian<br />

speakers orally and on writing at an advanced elementary<br />

level. Much of the class is conducted in Italian.<br />

itAl 211 intermediate italian i (3)<br />

Prerequisite: ITAL 112. Further development of skills in<br />

listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Italian. Italian<br />

culture, history, current events, and geography provide the<br />

context for instruction in grammatical structures, vocabulary,<br />

pronunciation, and composition. Focus is on acquiring the<br />

skills necessary to communicate with native Italian speakers<br />

orally and on writing at an intermediate level. Class is<br />

conducted primarily in Italian. Students may receive credit for<br />

only one of the following courses: ITAL 114 or ITAL 211.<br />

itAl 212 intermediate italian ii (3)<br />

(Serves as preparation for upper-level courses in Italian<br />

language, culture, and literature.) Prerequisite: ITAL 211.<br />

Improvement of skills in listening, speaking, reading, and<br />

writing in Italian. Italian culture, history, current events, and<br />

geography provide the context for instruction in grammatical<br />

structures, vocabulary, pronunciation, and composition. Focus<br />

is on acquiring the skills necessary to communicate with<br />

native Italian speakers orally and on writing at an advanced<br />

intermediate level. Class is conducted almost entirely in<br />

Italian. Students may receive credit for only one of the<br />

following courses: ITAL 115 or ITAL 212.<br />

itAl 250 intermediate Conversation (3)<br />

Prerequisite: ITAL 212. Further development of<br />

conversational skills in Italian. Focus is on comprehending<br />

and responding to questions seeking concrete information<br />

(such as personal background, interests, needs, family, and<br />

work), comprehending media announcements and reports,<br />

and describing visual situations. Emphasis is on vocabulary<br />

building and idiomatic expression. Short readings from a<br />

variety of increasingly sophisticated formal and informal<br />

sources are used. Students who have already successfully<br />

completed ITAL 201 may not earn credit for this course.<br />

itAl 301 Review grammar and Composition i (3)<br />

Prerequisite: ITAL 212. A systematic and thorough review of<br />

grammar with emphasis on the more idiomatic and difficult<br />

points of syntax.
