AssoCiAtE oF ARts dEgREEs<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> <strong>Europe</strong> offers programs of study leading to <strong>UMUC</strong> associate’s and bachelor’s degrees. Students should consult with a<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong> field representative at their local education center about programs offered in their community. All requirements noted<br />

for the AA degree involve lower-level courses, although appropriate upper-level courses may be substituted.<br />

CoMMon aSSoCiate oF artS deGree reqUireMentS<br />

1. The Associate of Arts degree (AA) requires the completion of a minimum of 60 credits, at least 15 of which must<br />

be taken through <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

2. Of these 60 credits, 32 credits must be earned in courses that fulfill the general education requirements<br />

listed below.<br />

3. The remaining 28 credits must satisfy the requirements of the curriculum the student has selected.<br />

4. A grade point average of 2.0 or higher in all courses taken through <strong>UMUC</strong> is required. Students must earn a<br />

grade of C or higher in all core or core-related curriculum courses.<br />

5. A student should complete one associate’s degree before applying for another one.<br />

A. Communications 9<br />

WRTG 101/WRTG 101X (3 credits)<br />

Must be completed within first 18 credits with <strong>UMUC</strong>. Placement<br />

test required. May not be earned through credit by examination.<br />

Another writing course (3 credits)<br />

All 3-credit WRTG courses (except WRTG 288, 486A or 486B);<br />

ENGL 102, 294, 303, and 485; JOUR 201 apply.<br />

A third course in writing or a course in speech communication<br />

(3 credits).<br />

All 3-credit COMM, SPCH, and WRTG courses (except 486A and<br />

486B); ENGL 102, 294, 303, and 485; and JOUR 201 apply.<br />

No more than 3 credits of writing credit may be earned through<br />

credit by examination.<br />

b. Arts and Humanities 6<br />

One 3-credit course that offers a historical perspective<br />

(any 3-credit ARTH or HIST course except ARTH 100).<br />

One 3-credit course chosen from the following disciplines: ARTH,<br />

ARTT, ASTD (not all apply), HIST, HUMN, MUSC, PHIL,<br />

THET, dance, literature, or foreign language.<br />

The two courses must be in different disciplines.<br />

C. behavioral and social sciences 6<br />

One 3-credit course each in two of the following disciplines:<br />

AASP (AASP 201 only), ANTH, ASTD (not all apply), BEHS,<br />

CCJS, ECON, GEOG, GERO, GVPT, PSYC, SOCY, or WMST<br />

(WMST 200 only). Note: Not all CCJS and GERO courses apply.<br />

d. biological and Physical sciences 7<br />

A science lecture course (3 credits) with related laboratory course<br />

(1 credit) or a science course combining lecture and laboratory<br />

(4 credits).<br />

Any other science course (3 credits)<br />

Courses from the following disciplines satisfy both requirements:<br />

ASTR, BIOL, CHEM, GEOL, NSCI, PHYS, biotechnology,<br />

botany, entomology, general science, and zoology.<br />

E. mathematics 3<br />

MATH 103, MATH 106, MATH 107, or a course<br />

at or above the level of college algebra.<br />

Students should refer to the specific curriculum for requirements<br />

or recommendations.<br />

Must be completed within the first 18 credits with <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

Placement test required.<br />

F. library Research 1<br />

LIBS 150 Information Literacy and Research Methods must be<br />

completed within the first 18 credits with <strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

AdditionAl CuRRiCulum REquiREmEnts 28<br />

IFSM 201 Introduction to Computer-Based Systems: All associate’s<br />

degree curricula, except for the computer studies curriculum, require<br />

students to complete IFSM 201 (which will be applied to the general<br />

education requirement in interdisciplinary and emerging issues/<br />

computing for students who continue to the bachelor’s degree).<br />

Students may choose a general curriculum or a specialized<br />

curriculum and must take 28 credits of coursework within their<br />

chosen curriculum. At least 9 credits in core or core-related<br />

coursework for the chosen curriculum must be earned through<br />

<strong>UMUC</strong>.<br />

Students must earn a grade of C or higher in all core or core-related<br />

curriculum courses.<br />

The general curriculum is described on page 42 and the specialized<br />

curricula are described on pages 43-63 of this Catalog.<br />

The specialized curricula include:<br />

G accounting<br />

G business and management<br />

G computer studies<br />

G foreign language area studies<br />

(Arabic, German, Italian, Spanish)<br />

G management studies<br />

G mathematics<br />

G women’s studies
