sPAn 212 intermediate spanish ii (3)<br />

(Serves as preparation for upper-level courses in Spanish<br />

language, culture, and literature.) Prerequisite: SPAN 211.<br />

Improvement of skills in listening, speaking, reading,<br />

and writing in Spanish. Spanish culture, history, current<br />

events, and geography provide the context for instruction<br />

in grammatical structures, vocabulary, pronunciation, and<br />

composition. Focus is on acquiring the skills necessary to<br />

communicate with native Spanish speakers orally and on<br />

writing at an advanced intermediate level. Class is conducted<br />

almost entirely in Spanish. Students may receive credit for<br />

only one of the following courses: SPAN 115, SPAN 202, or<br />

SPAN 212.<br />

sPAn 250 intermediate Conversation (3)<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 212. Further development of<br />

conversational skills in Spanish. Focus is on comprehending<br />

and responding to questions seeking concrete information<br />

(such as personal background, interests, needs, family, and<br />

work), comprehending media announcements and reports,<br />

and describing visual situations. Emphasis is on vocabulary<br />

building and idiomatic expression. Short readings from a<br />

variety of increasingly sophisticated formal and informal<br />

sources are used. Students who have already successfully<br />

completed SPAN 201 may not earn credit for this course.<br />

sPAn 301 Review grammar and Composition i (3)<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 212. A systematic and thorough review of<br />

grammar with emphasis on the more idiomatic and difficult<br />

points of syntax.<br />

sPAn 318 Commercial and Workplace spanish (4)<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 212 or an appropriate score on placement<br />

test. A study of Spanish business terminology, vocabulary,<br />

formats, and practices. Emphasis is on everyday spoken and<br />

written workplace Spanish, using authentic text from native<br />

speakers. Written and oral practice is provided in finding and<br />

communicating information, especially on commercial topics<br />

in business and other workplace situations. Assignments<br />

include a project involving specific vocabulary, forms of<br />

professional communication, and cultural protocols relevant<br />

to the student’s workplace or major. Students may receive<br />

credit for only one of the following courses: SPAN 315 or<br />

SPAN 318.<br />

sPAn 333 spanish life and Culture i (3)<br />

(Conducted in English.) A study of Spanish culture as<br />

embodied in its literary, artistic, and social traditions.<br />

Emphasis is on historical development. Field trips may be<br />

included.<br />

sPAn 334 spanish life and Culture ii (3)<br />

(Conducted in English.) A study of Spanish culture as<br />

embodied in its literary, artistic, and social traditions.<br />

Emphasis is on contemporary Spain. Field trips may be<br />

sPEECH<br />

Courses in speech (designated SPCH) may be applied as<br />

appropriate, for example, toward:<br />

G the general education requirement in communications;<br />

G a major or minor in communication studies; and<br />

G electives.<br />

sPCH 100 Foundations of speech Communication (3)<br />

(Fulfills the prerequisite for all 300- or 400-level speech<br />

courses.) An overview of the principles of communication.<br />

Verbal and nonverbal language, listening, group dynamics,<br />

and public speaking are highlighted. Emphasis is on applying<br />

communication principles to contemporary problems and<br />

preparing various types of oral discourse. Students may receive<br />

credit for only one of the following courses: SPCH 100,<br />

SPCH 100X, SPCH 101, SPCH 107, or SPCH 108.<br />

sPCH 101 introduction to Public speaking<br />

SPCH 100X, SPCH 101, SPCH 107, or SPCH 108.<br />

A study of basic principles of communication as applied to<br />

public speaking. Emphasis is on building skills in effective<br />

oral discourse, in particular the design and delivery of formal<br />

speeches. Assignments include a minimum of three formal<br />

speeches. Students may receive credit for only one of the<br />

following courses: SPCH 100, SPCH 100X, SPCH 101,<br />

SPCH 107, or SPCH 108.<br />

sPCH 324 Communication and gender (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Any SPCH course or COMM 300. An<br />

investigation of the way communication creates images<br />

of male and female. Consideration is given to what<br />

constitutes masculine and feminine characteristics, the<br />

differences between male and female behavior and styles in<br />

communicating, and the implications of those images and<br />

styles for interpersonal transactions.<br />

sPCH 482 intercultural Communication (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Any SPCH course or COMM 300. An<br />

examination of the major variables of communication in<br />

an intercultural context. Topics include cultural, racial, and<br />

national differences; stereotypes; values; cultural assumptions;<br />

and verbal and nonverbal channels.<br />
