<strong>the</strong> spirit of people through figurative<br />
abstract works<br />

Born and raised <strong>in</strong> Canada with Indian<br />
orig<strong>in</strong>s, Babita Shamji began her artistic<br />
career <strong>in</strong> 2017. After leav<strong>in</strong>g Canada <strong>in</strong><br />
2005, she embarked on a new journey<br />
to West Africa and lived <strong>in</strong> several countries<br />
over <strong>the</strong> span of ten years before f<strong>in</strong>ally settl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> Dubai. While pursu<strong>in</strong>g her passion for <strong>the</strong><br />
arts, she took some art classes as a hobby,<br />
but eventually pursued a serious course on<br />
f<strong>in</strong>e arts at <strong>the</strong> esteemed Lotus Educational<br />
Institute Dubai, which certified her as a f<strong>in</strong>e artist.<br />
Art has always been an <strong>in</strong>tegral part of Babita’s<br />
life, and she has always been drawn towards<br />
visual arts, dance, music, and perform<strong>in</strong>g arts.<br />
Her figurative abstract works embody who she<br />
is as an artist. She connects l<strong>in</strong>es, shapes,<br />
forms, and gestural marks to achieve a modern<br />
effect, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> essence with m<strong>in</strong>imal details<br />
and a limited color palette.<br />
Babita draws <strong>in</strong>spiration from <strong>the</strong> freedom of<br />
expression, and abstract art is her forte. She<br />
enjoys experiment<strong>in</strong>g with different mediums<br />
such as collage, charcoal, chalk, and textures to<br />
br<strong>in</strong>g depth to her art pieces. She has created<br />
a series of figurative abstract African works that<br />
have been featured <strong>in</strong> numerous exhibitions<br />
and caught <strong>the</strong> attention of notable curators<br />
and collectors. Her works have been exhibited<br />
<strong>in</strong> Italy, Canada, Africa, and <strong>the</strong> UAE.<br />
In her artist statement, Babita emphasizes<br />
that her work is driven by her passion for<br />
creativity, and she seeks to recreate pieces<br />
that had a visual and emotional impact on her.<br />
Her <strong>in</strong>spiration comes from nature, humanity,<br />
experiences from travel, and <strong>the</strong> emotions she<br />
felt <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> events <strong>in</strong> life. Her work reflects<br />
her appreciation of <strong>the</strong> beauty of women, both<br />
<strong>in</strong>terior and exterior, and <strong>the</strong> spirit of people.<br />
