Antoaneta Hillman creates abstract
emotional landscapes that
predominantly use white and are
executed in an encaustic medium.
Her preferred medium suits her temperament
completely, as it is fast, hot, and durable.
Encaustic medium is made of liquefied beeswax
and pigments, and for durability, dammar resin
is added. She uses wood panel as a substrate,
and the wax is fused with a heat gun or propane
torch. Antoaneta Hillman’s work in encaustic
is versatile, combining sculpture, collage, and
painting in symbiosis. However, with this variety
comes the challenge of deciding what is best
for the final result. She is drawn to minimalism,
but at the same time, she can’t give up on rich,
lavish colors and detail. This is why she works
on two bodies of work at the same time - one
minimal and the other blooming with colors.
Scraping the layers of wax to reveal what
lies beneath is like scraping the new to get to
the old and well-known. Adding the sculptural
effect of poured wax is the final definition, the
stamp of the work. Antoaneta Hillman’s life is
divided between two countries, which can be
overwhelming and challenging, but it broadens
her view and understanding of the world. She
carries the culture of Bulgaria into her life in
Dallas, two very opposite realities. Her work is
represented by Cinq gallery located in Dallas
art district, and she enjoys the attention of local
and international collectors.
Antoaneta Hillman’s process of painting is
almost meditative, and she never fears not
having inspiration and new ideas. She doesn’t
get obsessed with the plan for the final result,
as painting gives her freedom and a sense of
purpose. She can’t imagine a life without art.
