Yunchul Kim is a South Korean artist and
electroacoustic music composer who
has gained international recognition
for his work that explores the concept
of “material” and its potential tendencies. His
art embodies a world before human cultures
or language, where humans, non-humans,
machines, materials, and substances
are considered equal. Kim’s works have
been presented by renowned international
organizations, including CCCB, FACT, Ars
Electronica, and the Frankfurt Museum of Art.
He has received various awards, including
the Collide Award from CERN and the VIDA
15.0 Third Prize. Kim is a transdisciplinary
artist who works in installations, drawings,
sound, texts, and other media. He integrates
science, technology, music, philosophy, and
poetry into his practice, unraveling a universe
of mattereal entanglements. Kim is currently
based in Seoul, Korea, and has been a chief
researcher of the research group Mattereality
at the Transdisciplinary Research Program at
the Korea Institute for Advanced Study. He is
also a member of the art and science project
group Fluid Skies and the artistic research
project Liquid Things at the Art and Science
Department of the University of Applied Arts,
Vienna, Austria.
Yunchul’s artwork, “The Dust of Suns
II,” has caught the public eye with its
recent participation in Art Dubai 2023,
where it stood out as one of the most
distinguished pieces on display. The
artwork showcases Yunchul’s mastery
of his craft and innovative approach to
art, further solidifying his position as a
prominent artist in the contemporary art
world.
