• In the First World War, Germany launched their last major<br />

offensive during the Battle of the Marne. Following their repulsion<br />

at the hands of American, British, and Italian forces, the Germans<br />

would not launch another offensive, eventually agreeing to an<br />

armistice in November.<br />

<strong>July</strong> 16th, 1945 and 1969<br />

• The experimental bomb “Fat Boy” was set off in the New<br />

Mexican desert. The atomic bomb created a mushroom cloud that<br />

rose above 40,000 feet and emitted heat three times to temperature<br />

of the sun, annihilating all plant and animal life in a mile radius.<br />

• The Apollo 11 Lunar Landing mission begins with its liftoff<br />

from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.<br />

• President Truman signs an executive order determining<br />

the line of succession should a president die in office or become<br />

incapacitated. This would eventually become the 25th Amendment<br />

that was ratified in 1967.<br />

<strong>July</strong> 20th, 1969<br />

• The world watched<br />

as U.S. astronaut Neil<br />

Armstrong took man’s<br />

first step on the moon.<br />

As he stepped on the<br />

surface of the moon<br />

he said, “That’s one<br />

small step for man,<br />

one giant leap for<br />

mankind.”<br />
