DAILY PRACTICE
I often tell my students that sketchbooks
should be used every single day—this
is very important. If you don’t practice
daily you will stop learning. It is also
extremely important that artists become
close observers of everything around
them. During drawing practice, be sure
to carefully observe the people you see
around you. This helps bring life to your
characters. We can capture in our mind the
unique characteristics that each person
possesses, then later download them to
paper through our pen strokes.
In the example below, I want to show you
why it is so important to continue studying
and practicing anatomy. After you have a
good understanding of how to draw the
human body, you can start to distort and
change characters as you design them,
stylizing their bodies using different shapes
and volumes.
I created these example sketches using the
same process you’ve been learning, but
stylized them differently. The drawing on
the left is created using only circular shapes
while the right is drawn using angular
shapes to achieve different body types.
PRO TIP: Understanding anatomy is important so that you
can distort and change characters as you design them.
