and other simple shapes to build each part
of the body. I think in tridimensional form
to create volume which will help us later on
when we render light and shadows.
Now I begin to sketch in basic shapes and
lines for the figure. You can see in the image
labeled example (see previous page) how I
visualize these geometric shapes and use
them to build out the structure of the body.
The next step is to clean up my line work—
this is call the inking stage—and my
drawing is now ready to be colored. I do
my work with Photoshop in Cintiq, where
I can create separate layers. This allows me
to have my clean lines on their own layer so
they are not disrupted when I add color.
Before moving on to color the artwork, it is
important to check our drawing to be sure
it is structured correctly. You need to make
sure the extremities follow human anatomy
correctly.
I like to check my work by thinking in
points of reference. Our extremities are not
perfectly parallel. A good point of reference
is usually in direct line with the ears. I also
like to imagine a mesh that dictates the
volume of each muscle (see the image
labeled notes below).
Reviewing these structural details helps
improve our drawings, no matter the style
you plan to use, be it a functional drawing
or one that is stylized for animation.
