<strong>The</strong> duty of the several officers, chosen annually, is next<br />

defined at length.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> master has it in special charge, to see that all the<br />

by-laws of his lodge, as well as the general regulations<br />

from the grand lodge, be duly observed, that his wardens<br />

discharge their office faithfully," &c. &c.—Book of Cons.<br />

p. 44.<br />

He has the general authority of president of a society.<br />

" OF THE WARDENS OF A LODGE.<br />

44 None but Master Masons can be wardens of a lodge.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> senior warden succeeds to all the duties of the master,<br />

and fills the chair, when he is absent. 91<br />

44 <strong>The</strong> business of the wardens in the lodge is, generally<br />

to assist the master in conducting the business, and managing<br />

the craft, in due form and order, when the master is<br />

present."—Book of Cons. pp. 46,47.<br />

<strong>The</strong> secretary and treasurer perform the duties usually<br />

implied in their offices.<br />

" OF THE DEACONS OF A LODGE.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> deacons are to assist the wardens in the execution<br />

of their duty, to examine and welcome visiting brethren, to<br />

prepare candidates, and to perform such other services as<br />

are assigned them.<br />

" STEWARD.<br />

44 <strong>The</strong> stewards are to provide refreshment, and make a<br />

regular report of the expense to the treasurer, and to see<br />

that the regalia (furniture) of the lodge are in good order,<br />

and always ready for use.<br />

44 OF THE TYLER OF A LODGE.<br />

44 In order that due decorum be observed, while the lodge<br />

is engaged in what is serious and solemn, and for the preservation<br />

of secresy and good harmony, a brother who is<br />

skilled in the master's part, shall be appointed and paid for
