ground, in the same spot where it was shown to him—<br />

which, like that, consisted of nine arches, one above another,<br />

and dedicated the same to God. This happened in<br />

that part of the world which was afterwards called the land<br />

of Canaan, since known by the name of the Holy Land.<br />

" Enoch, in imitation of what he had seen, caused a triangular<br />

plate of gold to be made, each side of which was<br />

a cubit long; he enriched it with the most precious stones,<br />

and incni8ted the plate upon a stone of agate of the same<br />

form. He then engraved upon it the same ineffable characters<br />

which God had shown to him, and placed it on a<br />

triangular pedestal of white marble, which he deposited in<br />

the ninth or deepest arch.<br />

" When Enoch's temple was completed, he received the<br />

following command, viz. ' Make a door of stone, and let<br />

there be a ring of iron therein, by which it may be occasionally<br />

raised, and let it be placed over the opening of the<br />

first arch, that the sacred matters enclosed therein may be<br />

preserved from the universal destruction now impending/<br />

And he did so; and none but Enoch knew of the precious<br />

treasure which the arches contained, nor knew the right<br />

pronunciation of the great and sacred name. 1 '<br />

<strong>The</strong> Monitor next gives an account of Enoch's two pillars,<br />

and the wonderful preservation of the knowledge of the<br />

liberal arts, " particularly of <strong>Masonry</strong>/ 9 during the universal<br />

deluge; which topic has been already noticed. I take<br />

up the account of the Monitor relating to this ineffable<br />

name after the deluge, in the following words: " We learn<br />

from Holy Writ, the history of succeeding times, till the<br />

Israelites became slaves to the Egyptians; from which<br />

bondage they were freed under the conduct of Moses. <strong>The</strong><br />

same sacred book informs us that Moses was beloved of<br />

God, and that the Most High spoke to him on Mount<br />

Sinai. To Moses God communicated his divine law written<br />

on tables of stone, with many promises of a renewed<br />

alliance. He also gave him the true pronunciation of his
