present. Christian worshippers, that is, men using the<br />

forms of Christianity in their usual services, and bred up to<br />

no other, except as they were taught in the lodges, did not<br />

leave out this glorious name in our worship by an oversight<br />

No, no; much as I would rejoice to light upon the slightest<br />

palliation of this treason against their Lord, in our grand<br />

chaplains, I must believe the omission is not accidental,<br />

is not made by a momentary forgetfiilness of the promise,<br />

" Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name,<br />

he will give it you," (John, xvi. 23.) but in obedience<br />

to the stern laws of <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Masonry</strong>, which level all distinctions<br />

of religion as well as rank, and hail the Arab,<br />

the Mohawk, and the Tartar, as brethren of the same devotional<br />

family with the Christian and the Jew. <strong>The</strong> worship<br />

compiled in the Books of Constitutions of <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Masonry</strong>,<br />

is modelled on the principles of <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Masonry</strong>, and<br />

not on the doctrines of the cross: it is made subservient to<br />

the laws of a mystical society, and contrary to the precepts<br />

of the gospel; it is published for the honour of the mystery,<br />

and is a reproach upon Him who came down from Heaven,<br />

and now has the government there.<br />

Reader, let not a doubt check the rising of your indignation<br />

against this deep scheme of infidelity; against<br />

this new mode of attack upon the religion in which we have<br />

been bred. Under the influence of Christianity, our country<br />

has risen from a feeble band to be a mighty nation; and<br />

the district school and the Christian temple, rise on every<br />

hand, where our fathers have seen the hut of the savage<br />

and the beast of prey. No lover of his country, no demagogue<br />

of a party, can wish to see the religion of his country<br />

and of his fathers trampled upon and despised, however<br />

secretly it may be done, whether in a lodge-room, or in the<br />

vault of the royal arch, or in the masonic tabernacle.<br />

And is it not trampled upon, when the very name<br />

of its founder, protector, and head, is banished from the religious<br />

ceremonies of the lodge-room? When in the fre-
