than sovereign contempt:" (Town, p. 26.) and no doubt<br />

it would take with the people ; the lodges woald be greatly<br />

increased in all the earth, and the amiable and accommodating<br />

spirit of <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Masonry</strong> would be charmingly, clearly<br />

illustrated.<br />

And, now, ever}' nation sing to their own divinities, Turk.<br />

Chinese, Brahmin, and Savage :<br />

u From heaven since such blessings flow,<br />

u Let every Mason, while below,<br />

" Our noble science here improve;<br />

" Twill raise his soul to realms above,<br />

u And make his lodge a lodge of love."<br />

It would be very appropriate, to issue for the use of the<br />

craft, one edition of such work in the universal language,<br />

suitable for the different religions of the world. <strong>The</strong> grand<br />

chaplain and his chapter are of the Christian persuasion,<br />

since they connect <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Masonry</strong> only with Christianity in<br />

their eulogiums, and show at full length the coincidence of<br />

the craft and divine revelation. I am not acquainted with<br />

Chinese or Arabic, else I would make an effort to find a<br />

parallel in the manner of Mr. Town, between their religious<br />

schemes, and <strong>Free</strong> <strong>Masonry</strong>. But every reader can<br />

imagine the character of such a parallel, from a perusal of<br />

Mr. Town's, and a moment's reflection upon the following<br />

statement:<br />

" When the lodge is closed, each departs untainted by<br />

the other; the Jew to his synagogue, the Mahometan to his<br />

mosque, and the Christian to his church, as fully impressed<br />

as ever, with the divine origin and rectitude of his own<br />

faith, from the principles of which he has never for one<br />

moment deviated, either in thought or deed." (New Monitor,<br />

p. 110.)<br />

And this must be the reason why masonic prayers are,<br />

not one in six, lifted up in the name of the Lord of Glory:<br />
