The following techniques are designed to correct two
of the most common lens problems:
• Barrel distortion and
• Pincushion distortion.
As we have already seen in technique 7.05 the new Correct Camera Distortion fi lter that ships
with Photoshop Elements 5.0 can quickly and easily correct perspective problems in your
photos, but this isn’t the end of the feature’s abilities. The Remove Distortion slider is designed
specifi cally for removing the barrel distortion or pincushioning effects common with some
lenses. For best results this slider can be used in conjunction with the Rotate, Perspective
and Vignetting controls to fi ne-tune the look of your photo. This feature can also be used to
intentionally add the effects of each of these lens problems in order to produced bloated or
pinched photos.
The Remove Distrortion control >>
Moving the slider to the right removes the
effect of pincushioning by causing the
picture to bulge. Sliding the control to the
right pinches the picture inwards correcting
barrel distortion.
