3.1.3 Socioeconomic demographics <strong>of</strong> participant families<br />

Lifestyles, hous<strong>in</strong>g conditions and socioeconomic background <strong>of</strong> the participant<br />

families varied with<strong>in</strong> the group. <strong>The</strong>re was a predom<strong>in</strong>ance <strong>of</strong> higher social groups<br />

(57% - 20 families class I-III). 42% (15 families) were <strong>in</strong> the lower social classes<br />

(IV-IX). Only 2% were from a household were both partners where unemployed.<br />

This is not fully reflective <strong>of</strong> the unemployment rates <strong>in</strong> this region. <strong>The</strong><br />

unemployment rate <strong>in</strong> Leicester city is 11.5% and the county rate is 5.2% compared<br />

with the national average <strong>of</strong> 6.9% (ONS 2009).<br />

<strong>The</strong> social class <strong>of</strong> each family was determ<strong>in</strong>ed by us<strong>in</strong>g the classification as assigned<br />

to the highest wage earner <strong>in</strong> the family (irrespective <strong>of</strong> whether this was mother or<br />

father) us<strong>in</strong>g government classifications from the Office for National Statistics (ONS<br />

2009).<br />

Social class 1 - six (17%) families - higher manager/pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Social class 2 - ten (29%) families - lower manger/pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Social class 3 - four (11%) families- <strong>in</strong>termediate<br />

Social class 4 – one (2%) family – small employer / account worker<br />

Social class 5 - no families - lower craft/supervisory<br />

Social class 6 - eight (22%) - semi rout<strong>in</strong>e workers<br />

Social class 7 -five (14%) families - rout<strong>in</strong>e workers<br />

Social class 8 - one (2%) family was unemployed.<br />
