Only 2 families (6%) were resident <strong>in</strong> a flat, the rest lived <strong>in</strong> houses <strong>of</strong> various types.<br />

6 (17%) <strong>of</strong> houses were detached properties, 17 (49%) semi detached, 10 (29%) were<br />

terraced houses. 69% <strong>of</strong> all hous<strong>in</strong>g (24/35) was owner occupied, leav<strong>in</strong>g 11 (31%)<br />

rental accommodation. 4 (11% <strong>of</strong> total) <strong>of</strong> these houses/flats were rented from the<br />

council. 94% (33 properties) had full gas central heat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

<strong>The</strong> average pre tax total household <strong>in</strong>come (SD) was £39 532 (£18K) with a range <strong>of</strong><br />

£10 000 to £80 000. Maternal <strong>in</strong>come pre birth <strong>of</strong> baby was £17 772 (range £0 to £40<br />

000) whereas paternal <strong>in</strong>come averaged at £22 795 (range 0 to £60 000). All<br />

participant mothers completed the questions related to f<strong>in</strong>ance.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Corney score (SD) was 1.88 (1.67). It is a measure <strong>of</strong> the number <strong>of</strong> adverse life<br />

events experienced by the families. <strong>The</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imum score was 0/10 and the maximum<br />

score was 6/10.<br />

<strong>The</strong> average Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh Postnatal Depression Score (SD) for the mothers was 5.32<br />

(6.202); range 0 to 25. A score <strong>of</strong> 13/30 or greater <strong>in</strong>dicates possible depression.<br />

Three (8%) mothers required <strong>in</strong>tervention or were cl<strong>in</strong>ically depressed. One mother<br />

<strong>of</strong> three children, at the same time as cop<strong>in</strong>g with the birth <strong>of</strong> her newborn, had to<br />

cope with the death <strong>of</strong> her older child dur<strong>in</strong>g the family‟s participation <strong>in</strong> the study.<br />

He had been ill with chronic illness and severe disability from birth. She elected to<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong> the study despite her bereavement. One mother had a history <strong>of</strong> depression<br />

and was go<strong>in</strong>g through a possible separation with her husband. <strong>The</strong> third mother had<br />

a significant number <strong>of</strong> adverse life events <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g unemployment, bereavement <strong>of</strong><br />
