 Maximise technique for measur<strong>in</strong>g cycl<strong>in</strong>g gene expression <strong>in</strong> adults and<br />

<strong>in</strong>fants from buccal swabs – do experiments <strong>in</strong> lab controlled sett<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

dampen down „noise‟ vs. home studies<br />

 Study <strong>of</strong> the effects <strong>of</strong> different <strong>in</strong>fant care rout<strong>in</strong>es on <strong>in</strong>fant physiology (G<strong>in</strong>a<br />

Ford vs. demand feed<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>fant led bed times, places <strong>of</strong> sleep) us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

anthropological methods<br />

More detailed sleep work to def<strong>in</strong>e the ontogeny <strong>of</strong> sleep <strong>in</strong> first postnatal<br />

months (possibly us<strong>in</strong>g behavioural observation and portable PSG)<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>e further effect <strong>of</strong> illness and social circumstances on physiology<br />

Further work on <strong>in</strong>fant separation from mother-<strong>in</strong>fant dyad and the<br />

consequences <strong>of</strong> this on <strong>in</strong>fant physiology<br />

Direct<strong>in</strong>g our scientific enquiry <strong>in</strong>to areas that simultaneously <strong>in</strong>clude topics <strong>of</strong><br />

scientific value, with the search for answers to questions parents want to know will<br />

allow the cont<strong>in</strong>uation <strong>of</strong> researcher-carer partnerships which were <strong>in</strong>valuable <strong>in</strong> this<br />

project. Ref<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g our knowledge <strong>of</strong> postnatal physiology and development will<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease our understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the implications <strong>of</strong> physiological malfunction and<br />

delayed maturation. This may help contribute to the understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> foetal orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

adult diseases such as those <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> Syndrome X (Diabetes mellitus, Coronary<br />

Heart Disease, Hypertension- all associated with Obesity) and neurodevelopmental<br />

conditions which have a disruption <strong>of</strong> circadian rhythmicity as a prom<strong>in</strong>ent feature.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally it may contribute the f<strong>in</strong>al pieces <strong>of</strong> the jigsaw puzzle known as the disease<br />

entity Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. <strong>The</strong> work is labour <strong>in</strong>tensive and detailed but<br />

the privilege <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g hand <strong>in</strong> hand with mothers and fathers <strong>of</strong> newborn <strong>in</strong>fants<br />
