Sleep environment <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fants<br />

All mothers reported plac<strong>in</strong>g their <strong>in</strong>fant sup<strong>in</strong>e rout<strong>in</strong>ely dur<strong>in</strong>g night time sleep.<br />

<strong>The</strong> most common sleep surface was a Moses basket (19 <strong>in</strong>fants which equals 54%).<br />

Just under half <strong>of</strong> the group were placed <strong>in</strong> cots (42.9%). Most commonly <strong>in</strong>fants<br />

(80%) <strong>in</strong>fants were <strong>in</strong> the same room as their parents. One <strong>in</strong>fant co slept (slept <strong>in</strong><br />

parental bed). Seven (20%) slept <strong>in</strong> their own room. Wrapp<strong>in</strong>gs were light to<br />

moderate with an average total tog (SD) value (cloth<strong>in</strong>g and bedd<strong>in</strong>g comb<strong>in</strong>ed) <strong>of</strong><br />

7.19. (2.454). <strong>The</strong> lowest night time temperature <strong>in</strong> the rooms were the <strong>in</strong>fants slept<br />

(SD) was 19.36 (1.95) o C. <strong>The</strong> highest average temperature (SD) was 22.24 (1.99) o C.<br />

Sleep<strong>in</strong>g bag use changed as babies got older with <strong>in</strong>fant sleep<strong>in</strong>g bags becom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

more common. Thirteen <strong>in</strong>fants (37%) used a sleep<strong>in</strong>g bag whilst twenty two <strong>in</strong>fants<br />

had no rout<strong>in</strong>e use.<br />

3.2 Summary <strong>of</strong> Data Collected<br />

147 temperature read<strong>in</strong>g were made. 136 were <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the analysis, which made<br />

an average <strong>of</strong> 4 per <strong>in</strong>fant. <strong>The</strong> data logger failure resulted <strong>in</strong> six temperature<br />

read<strong>in</strong>gs be<strong>in</strong>g discarded. A further 3 sets were not used due to probe dislodgement.<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> 466 ur<strong>in</strong>e samples were collected. 20 were <strong>in</strong>sufficient for cortisol analysis.<br />

4 were not suitable for melaton<strong>in</strong> estimation. 138 actigraphy record<strong>in</strong>gs were taken.<br />

Of these 135 were analysed. In total 599 samples were processed and analysed for<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> peripheral gene expression.<br />
