which relate to our key strategies and work alongside our cont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> our most valuable susta<strong>in</strong>able advantage, our people.<br />
1. Generat<strong>in</strong>g economic benefits<br />
With operations <strong>in</strong> over 30 countries the company has a farreach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
economic impact through the jobs we create, the wages<br />
and taxes we pay and the significant <strong>in</strong>vestments we make <strong>in</strong> the<br />
communities <strong>in</strong> which we operate. <strong>The</strong>se contributions are the<br />
foundation of how we make a positive impact on society. Without<br />
a competitive well-managed company generat<strong>in</strong>g long-term value,<br />
all of our other activities would be impossible. Dur<strong>in</strong>g difficult<br />
economic times the real value of an employer with a susta<strong>in</strong>able<br />
approach to build<strong>in</strong>g the bus<strong>in</strong>ess becomes even clearer.<br />
2. Promot<strong>in</strong>g responsible dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Our primary responsibility to our consumers is to make sure that<br />
our products are of the highest quality. However, as a leader <strong>in</strong> the<br />
beer <strong>in</strong>dustry we recognize that we have additional responsibilities<br />
relat<strong>in</strong>g to encourag<strong>in</strong>g the responsible enjoyment of our products.<br />
We take a three-pronged approach to this:<br />
• First, we help address and prevent alcohol-related problems<br />
through targeted campaigns. In 2008 we conducted three times<br />
more campaigns than ever before.<br />
• Second, we ensure that our own market<strong>in</strong>g and sales activities<br />
support our position on responsible dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and do not<br />
encourage alcohol misuse.<br />
• We also added a third focus area <strong>in</strong> 2008: the development of<br />
global standards that need to be reflected <strong>in</strong> local employee<br />
Responsible Dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g policies.<br />
3. Improv<strong>in</strong>g our environmental performance<br />
<strong>The</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>ability of our bus<strong>in</strong>ess and susta<strong>in</strong>ability of the<br />
environment go hand <strong>in</strong> hand. S<strong>in</strong>ce our products come from the<br />
earth, we understand that what’s good for the environment is also<br />
good for bus<strong>in</strong>ess. In practice this means be<strong>in</strong>g as efficient as<br />
possible <strong>in</strong> our use of natural resources, such as the water we use<br />
to brew our beers; recycl<strong>in</strong>g our byproducts and waste; and tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on the shared challenges of the future, such as climate change,<br />
by reduc<strong>in</strong>g our carbon footpr<strong>in</strong>t. In 2008 we made significant<br />
progress, not just <strong>in</strong> terms of achiev<strong>in</strong>g environmental targets,<br />
but <strong>in</strong> embedd<strong>in</strong>g our environmental processes more firmly with<strong>in</strong><br />
the bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
