Electrical and Mechanical Workshop
Experimental research requires functional equipment
and technical facilities around the clock. The main
task of the workshop is, therefore, the maintenance
and repair of instruments and technical help in emergencies,
whether it be the breakdown of an autoclave,
a cold room, a freezer or a laminar flow hood. Custom-made
equipment is another focus of the workshop‘s
services, for example, electrophoretic equipment
in the „ZMBH-design“, produced in a limited
series, relieves some strain on the budgets of research
groups. In the past two years, the workshop has fulfilled
requests for about 1500 repair jobs, 700 emergency
calls and has produced around 2500 pieces of
equipment or parts thereof.

Head Technicians
The ZMBH scientific staff includes two head technicians
who support the research groups by undertaking
organisational and technical tasks. Their responsibilities
are partly assigned at the level of individual storeys,
and partly towards the entire building; they also
act as safety officers for all areas including radioactive
and biological safety. Each of these scientists is supported
by a technician.
Tasks at „storey“ level are:
- Discussing problems with individual research
groups
- Organisation of, and taking minutes for, floor
meetings; implementing decisions
- Administrating the floor budget
- Purchase and maintenance of major communal
equipment
- Organisation of the washing-up kitchens
- Central purchasing of certain dangerous materials
such as radioactivity
- Assisting in moving operations when groups arrive
or depart
Tasks for the whole ZMBH are:
* Radioactive safety
- Organisation and monitoring of the various special
radioactive labs
- Central disposal of waste
- Regular radioactive safety courses for ZMBH employees
* Biological safety
- Making sure that the work is conducted in accordance
with the biological safety laws
- Giving advice to people writing biological safety
applications
- Regular biological safety courses for ZMBH employees
* Other safety precautions
* Disposal of chemical waste
* Taking care of the central stores of spare apparatus
