Verses, Translation and Commentary 175<br />

draṣṭṛdṛśyayoḥ saṁyogo heyahetuḥ<br />

The cause which is to be avoided is the indiscriminate association of the<br />

observer and what is perceived. (<strong>Yoga</strong> Sūtra 2.17)<br />

The idea that the individual spirit will merge into the absolute and will then<br />

be without senses is not given in Patañjali’s sūtras, even through many yogis<br />

and yogi philosophers seem to think so.<br />

Verse 38<br />

te smaxavupsgaR VyuTwane isÏy><br />

te samādhau upasargāḥ vyutthāne siddhayaḥ<br />

te – they, those abilities; samādhau – in samādhi continues effortless<br />

linkage of the attention to a higher concentration force, object or person;<br />

upasargāḥ – impediments; vyutthāne – in expressing, going outwards,<br />

rising up; siddhayaḥ – mystic perfectional skills.<br />

Those divination skills are obstacles<br />

in the practice of continuous effortless linkage of the attention<br />

to a higher concentration force, object or person.<br />

But in expressing,<br />

they are considered as mystic perfectional skills.<br />

Commentary:<br />

A yogi is stalled if he is distracted for exhibitions of the perfectional skills which<br />

are manifested as he progresses. Those student yogis who cannot resist such<br />

exhibitions are doomed. They become premature gurus of a very gullible and<br />

stupid public.<br />

Verse 39<br />

bNxkar[zEiwLyat! àcars<br />

bandhakāraṇa śaithilyāt pracāra<br />

saṁvedanāt ca cittasya paraśarīrāveśaḥ<br />

bandha – bondage; kāraṇa – cause; śaithilyāt – due to relaxation, collapse;<br />

pracāra – channel flow; saṁvedanāt – from knowing; ca – and; cittasya –<br />

of the mento-emotional energies; para – another; śarīra – body; āveśaḥ –<br />

entrance, penetration.<br />

The entrance into another body is possible<br />

by slackening the cause of bondage<br />

and by knowing the channels of the mento-emotional energy.<br />

Commentary:<br />

The slackening of the cause of bondage is done by a yogi, when he reaches the<br />

causal level mentioned in verse 35. From the causal plane, he is able to slacken<br />

the cause of his having to take his current body. Then he leaves that body<br />

temporarily while it stays in hibernation in samādhi. He enters forms of others.
