The advantage of the legal status categories lies <strong>in</strong> the easy access to specific legal status <strong>in</strong>formation. They are:<br />
Reliable and easy to use,<br />
Well suited for specific needs of legal status monitor<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
Current, as new codes and code def<strong>in</strong>itions are constantly updated.<br />
Anyway, note that the legal status categories are no more than a convenient summary of exist<strong>in</strong>g legal status code<br />
entries. Always consider these additional notes (see also the Monitor<strong>in</strong>g search example):<br />
NIF <strong>in</strong> EP or WO applications does not mean that all Designated States are concerned<br />
Lapse of a patent or application (denoted by NIF) can be reversed by a later event (e.g. re<strong>in</strong>statement or<br />
Supplementary Protection Certificate, SPC)<br />
ORE does not <strong>in</strong>clude NO OPPOSITION<br />
22.3 PATDPA<br />
PATDPA conta<strong>in</strong>s legal status <strong>in</strong>formation of German patent publications s<strong>in</strong>ce 1981 and of European patent<br />
publications s<strong>in</strong>ce 1998 <strong>in</strong> the NTE field. (The legal status on EP publications before this date concerns the<br />
designations <strong>in</strong> German only.) The legal status <strong>in</strong>formation of EP publications also conta<strong>in</strong>s data from the national<br />
phase of the designated states. The legal status is part of e.g. the NTE, ALL, and MAX formats.<br />
