Start<strong>in</strong>g from 1996 (DW 9626), German utility models are entered <strong>in</strong> the World Patents Index. A utility model may<br />

also appear with its application number as a priority application (with BR, CN, DE, ES, IT, and JP priorities).<br />

Note on text substances at <strong>in</strong>vention level. To improve the accessibility of the content of the patents the<br />

database producer formulates a new, enhanced title and an abstract <strong>in</strong> English. The words of the title can be<br />

searched <strong>in</strong> their basic grammatical form (Title Terms /TT) and are complemented by Additional Words (/AW). The<br />

proximity relations of the title words are ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the TT field. An onl<strong>in</strong>e thesaurus is <strong>available</strong> <strong>in</strong> the /TT field.<br />

Older titles consist of two parts separated by a dash. The first part names the field of the <strong>in</strong>vention while the second<br />

part summarises its novelty. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1999 there are newly structured titles and abstracts: The title is no longer<br />

segmented, but still names both the field of the <strong>in</strong>vention and its novelty. There are three different types of<br />

abstracts:<br />

Basic Onl<strong>in</strong>e (Alert) Abstract<br />

Technology Focus (only if sufficiently presented <strong>in</strong> the document)<br />

Extension Abstract (CPI file segment <strong>in</strong> WPIX only)<br />

The Alert Abstract is structured. The sections have these head<strong>in</strong>gs:<br />
