Guide to <strong>STN</strong> Patent Databases<br />

This manual is <strong>in</strong>tended for use as a textbook, work<strong>in</strong>g book and reference book for patent search<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>STN</strong><br />

International. It is designed to simplify access to onl<strong>in</strong>e patent <strong>in</strong>formation for the expert searcher hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

knowledge of the patent sector, and also to brush up the occasional user's knowledge of special features <strong>in</strong> patent<br />

search<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The manual is arranged as follows:<br />

The Introduction presents the ma<strong>in</strong> types of on-l<strong>in</strong>e patent searches <strong>in</strong> compact form. The tabular Overview<br />

of the <strong>databases</strong> and types of searches helps identify the sections of <strong>in</strong>terest when prepar<strong>in</strong>g a patent<br />

search.<br />

The short description of <strong>STN</strong> patent <strong>databases</strong> is not meant to replace the database sheets but to<br />

complement them with certa<strong>in</strong> details that are of particular <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> patent searches.<br />

Another chapter deals with the most essential Types of search, as far as possible cover<strong>in</strong>g all relevant<br />

<strong>databases</strong> and po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g out specific features of the <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>databases</strong>.<br />

These are illustrated by the <strong>Search</strong> examples, represent<strong>in</strong>g the basic strategies for search<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, some Surveys are presented which proved to be useful <strong>in</strong> practical work.<br />

When a search problem arises it is advisable to first consult the Introduction to identify the type of search and<br />

sections to be read, then to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation about the contents and important special features of the selected<br />

<strong>databases</strong> (Patent <strong>databases</strong> on <strong>STN</strong> International), then to read the notes on the search type <strong>in</strong> general and special<br />

features of the database (Types of search), and f<strong>in</strong>ally to work on the correspond<strong>in</strong>g examples (<strong>Search</strong> examples). And<br />

always consult a current database list before start<strong>in</strong>g your search.<br />
