dramatic call to action for preparedness (see www.ShakeOut.<strong>org</strong>). All <strong>SCEC</strong> members are<br />

encouraged to participate. On November 12-14, the City of Los Angeles and the Earthquakes and<br />

Megacities Initiative will host an International Earthquake Conference, bringing together<br />

international experts to discuss policy, planning, and preparedness (see www.iec.lacity.<strong>org</strong>).<br />

Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country continues to be the principal <strong>SCEC</strong> vehicle for providing<br />

earthquake science, mitigation, and preparedness information to the public. The updated 2007<br />

edition of the handbook is available for download at www.earthquakecountry.info/roots, and free<br />

copies can be ordered from the Center. In 2008, several Roots-related efforts are underway:<br />

• A Utah version of Putting Down Roots in Earthquake Country<br />

• Living on Shaky Ground, an update to the well-known earthquake booklet for California’s<br />

north coast, which will include now the Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety<br />

• The Seven Steps to an Earthquake Resilient Business, an new 16-page supplement developed<br />

for businesses by a <strong>SCEC</strong>-<strong>org</strong>anized committee of experts.<br />

• A major update of the Southern California version of Roots to include UCERF probability<br />

estimates and ShakeOut scenario results.<br />

posters, demos, and animations, as well as a film about the 2008 USEIT program.<br />

<strong>SCEC</strong> CEO staff continues to work with museums and other informal education venues to develop<br />

content and programs for earthquake education and to distribute <strong>SCEC</strong> resources, such as Roots. In<br />

2008, <strong>SCEC</strong> <strong>org</strong>anized a group of museums and other locations interested in earthquake education<br />

into a network of Earthquake Education and Public Information Centers (Earthquake EPICenters).<br />

<strong>SCEC</strong> is very active in the earth science education community, participating in <strong>org</strong>anizations such<br />

as the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, The Coalition for Earth System Education, and<br />
