Detta kunde inträffa eftersom Tyskland uppträdde som ockupationsmakt i staden, och svenskarna hade därför rätt att enligt diplomatisk konvention be- gära skydd av tyskarna! Wallenberg korsade inte endast Budapests gator i sina försök att hjälpa judar; han och andra diplomater fortsatte att besöka sina tyska och ungerska motsvarigheter och lyckades på det hela taget i sina ansträngningar att upprätthålla denna livs- viktiga men sköra ”skyddszon”, för åtminstone några av sina alltmer desperata skyddslingar. I motsats till den allmänt accepterade bilden lyckades varken Wallenberg eller andra neutrala diplomater skydda ”alla judar” i Budapest, även om de säkert hade velat göra det. Under hans nära sju månader i Budapest arbetade Wallenberg mycket nära ett antal ledande representanter för judarna i Budapest, och sedan pilkorsarna gripit makten arbetade de ännu närmare varandra. Han bidrog med ledarskap och visst diplomatiskt skydd, och de gav honom sitt förtroende och kunskap om de lokala förhål- landena. Information kunde nå Wallenberg vid vilken tid som helst på dygnet, och han kastade sig omedelbart in i vad han visste skulle vara en farlig och nervpåfrestande situation, där pilkorsar-mi- lis – en del tonåringar, andra berusade, desperata och våldsamma män – tvingade livrädda judar att lämna den relativa säkerhet deras tillflyktsorter erbjöd. De ökända ”dödsmarscherna” i november och december, som organiserades av ungrarna, ledde till att tusentals dog på vägen mellan Buda- pest och den österrikiska gränsen. Responding to one emergency call after another, Wallenberg bravely and imaginatively utilized his diplomatic status to shield some Jews from danger. The strength of his personality was on full display during these weeks; his charismatic boldness made a difference, and his heroic efforts saved many lives. Indeed, it is this time and these actions that so many survivors remember, and the indefatigable young Swede became an instant hero for the beleaguered Jews of Budapest. It is for his bravery and boldness between October 1944 and January 1945 that we remember and honour Raoul Wallenberg today. Throughout his almost seven months in Budapest Wallenberg worked very closely with a number of leading individuals from Budapest’s Jewish com- munity. After the Arrow Cross seized power they worked together even more closely. He provided them with leadership and a measure of diplomatic protection, and they provided him with their trust and knowledge of the local situation. Information would reach Wallenberg at any time of the day or night, and he would rush out into what he knew would be a dangerous, nerve-racking situation where Nyilas miltiamen – some teenagers, others drunk, desperate and violent men – forced terri- fied Jews from the relative safety of their shelters. The infamous “death marches” of November and December organized by the Hungarians killed thousands along the road between Budapest and the Austrian border. Thousands of others were forced into already overcrowded “Jewish houses” located throughout Budapest or, later, into the ghetto hastily formed in the middle of Pest, in which eventually some 70,000 Jews would suffer the last weeks of the war in horrible conditions. Many others were shot on the spot by the Arrow Cross or marched to the quays of the Danube river by sadistic party members, to be either shot into the water, or worse, pushed living but bound into the frigid waters to drown to death. Wallenberg did what was humanly possible to do, sometimes even more.
