FOREWORD
N submitting Volume XX of the "Cincinnatian" to the student-
body of the University perhaps it might be rvell to preface the
•work T^ith some explanation of what the "Cincinnatian" stands for
in student life and among student activities.
As a college institution, the publication made its first appearance
under the auspices of the Class of 1894 in its Junior year, and has re­
mained a Junior enterprise to the present time. With the University,
the "Cincinnatian" has widened its scope from the 114-page volume of
the Class of '94 to the comprehensive editions of late years.
A University year book, it embodies what the description implies;
a full, impartial record of each and every phase of University life and
mterests. Every aspect of undergraduate existence has its allotted place;
the literary and scientific, in the records of special clubs and student
publications; the athletic, in football, baseball, track, swimming and
basketball pages; the social, in the mention of dances, "parties," glee
concerts and fraternity life.
The purpose of the first "Cincinnatian" was not primarily to serve
undergraduate ends, but to express to the Senior Class of the year, a
feeling of indebtedness on the part of their fellows for the legacy of a
"better Cincinnati," which each class has bequeathed to their successors.
To the Seniors of 1914 we would say, that we of the Junior Class
have endeavored to bind herein as many of the memories and as much
of the spirit of their "Alma Mater" as can be put within the leaves of a
book- We ask that they take it with them as their "University" reduced
to portable dimensions. Whatever success may be ascribed to the under­
taking should be placed, where it belongs, to the credit of the "staff"
and the student-body for their interest and support.
