You madly dash around the bend,
Antl u|) the "Libry" steps.
You ])ause a moment to snatch a breath.
Your disheveled appearance to mend.
Then, in at the eight-ton oaken door.
Straight for the desk you start.
You're met with a smile, of ruthless guile.
And the bottom drops out of your heart.
"I'm really very sorry, but the clock says, 2 after 9—"
"The rule book orders; out with j'our quarters.
You'll have to pay the fine."
Sometimes j^ou endeavor to argue.
Others, you weep and wail.
Often you beg for nierc}'.
Your prayers are fo no avail.
Out on the book-strewn table.
Conies your last little two-bit piece.
You consign the "Rules" to the tropics.
With a rather indefinite lease.
I sometimes am given to wonder.
When Mi.ss Sfinison appears at the "Gate,"
If Saint Peter will charge her a quarter.
Because she was two minutes late!
