Benefactors of the University
To the original bequest of Charles McMicken, additional
funds for the maintenance of the University have
been provided by individual citizens. In 1890, Matthew
Thoms left property valued at $130,000 in its favor; Mary
P. and Eliza 0. Ropes endowed the Chair of Comparative
Literature, as a memorial to their father, Nathaniel Ropes,
of Cincinnati; in 1899 the gift of David Sinton, amounting
to $100,000, was made. The friends of Dr. Joseph Eichberg
presented the University with $45,000 to establish the Joseph
Eichberg Chair of Physiology. In 1911, Dr. Brunning willed
the bulk of his estate to the College of Medicine, which was
followed in 1912 by Mr. Harry Levy's presentation of $50,-
000, to be known as the "Julie Fries Levy Endowment;" and
Mrs. Emery's fund of $125,000, in 1913, to endow the Chair
of Pathology, in the College of Medicine.
The Observatory, Hanna Hall, Cunningham Hall, and
the Library are the gifts of John Kilgour, Henry Hanna,
Briggs S. Cunningham and Asa Van Wormer, respectively.
The University is indebted also to the following for
valuable contributions to the endowment and equipment
