onds in the twenty and fifty and came tie for first in the fancj' dive.
Lyon, captain of 'Varsity, won the ]dunge and the fifty, both with
slow times, and .swam third in the twenty. Langhammer, of the
Sophs, helped Joe Morris out with four ]K)int.s—second in the
plunge and third in the fifty. Other point winners were Baehr, tie
for first in the fancy dive; Bieler. second in the 100 and quarter;
H. H. Wagner, third in ^he fancy dive and |)lnnge; Brett, third in
the 100, and Holloway, third in the quarter. Tiiis meet served to
uncover several good Varsity possibilities, stimulated Freshman
interest and populated the pool with swimming hopefuls during the
ensuing two months. Then came the announcement of Varsity's
schedule: Cornell, March 28, 1914; Princeton, April 11, 1914, and
the minor meet of C. G. A. C, April 16, 1914, with a final splurge in
the big C. G. A. C. open meet, April 25, 1914. That schedule alone
furnished talk for the school for a niontii. Wiiat a rash move
Manager Joe had made taking on such big teams! Some few had
hopes of Varsity's making a showing. The call for the team was
answered by some seventeen men. These were weeded down to
eight tried and true "men-fish."
March 28, 1914! Just as big a date in McMicken's athletic history
as Jul}' 4, 1776, in the United State's political growth! Cornell
was there, fresh from a win over Harvard. Cornell had to lower
her Red and White to the Black and Red of Varsity. No more need
be said than this, Joe Morris was in good shape. True, the whole
Varsity team is to be congratulated forever and ever for turning
the search-light of F^astern college reckoning upon our modest
college, but to Joe goes the large part of the honor. He won the
twenty, fifty, 100 and 220, Captain Pat took the plunge, with Langhammer,
second, and "Fuz" Baehr was returned second in the dive.
Var.sitj' captured the field championshi]) cup Avliilc Cornell, bj'
Avinning the relaj', also took home a trophy cup for this event. The
pool was crowded to the limit, and we (juote the Enquirer to effect
that "the meet was the most successful held in this citj', and also
marked the first appearance of an Eastern college team at the
University." 'Nuf said.
