1900 Ban on building anywhere on the Waldschlösschen meadows, in perpetuity<br />

1927/28 City building officer Paul Wolf introduces the concept of the “total work of<br />

art”.<br />

1941 Preservation order for the Elbe river area (Elbe Preservation Act)<br />

1984 The GDR signs up to the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the<br />

World Cultural and Natural Heritage.<br />

1988 Institut <strong>für</strong> Denkmalpflege (Institute for the Preservation of Monuments)<br />

works up proposals for potential World Heritage Sites.<br />

1989 Application for listing of the historic centre of <strong>Dresden</strong> (the ensemble of<br />

Theaterplatz and Brühl Terrace, along with the Zwinger, the Opera, the<br />

Roman Catholic Hofkirche, the Castle and the art and science collections).<br />

The application is rejected, the rebuilt monuments being deemed insuffi-<br />

ciently authentic in terms of original fabric.<br />

1998 The Conference of (German) Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs<br />

recommends listing of the <strong>Dresden</strong> Elbe Valley (application by 1st February<br />

2003).<br />

December 2000 Formation of a working group (from the Departments of Town Planning,<br />

Preservation of Monuments, Environmental and Nature Conservation and<br />

Economic Development) to prepare the application for listing<br />

January 2003 Application for World Heritage status<br />

July 2004 Inscription of the <strong>Dresden</strong> Elbe Valley as a “continuing cultural landscape”<br />

in the World Heritage List on the basis of Criteria II, III, IV and V of the<br />

“Guidelines for the Implementation of the Convention Concerning the<br />

Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage”.<br />
