Chemistry, English, Geology-Geophysics, Law, Maps, Music, Oriental Languages,<br />

Physics, and the University Elementary School.<br />

The resources of these libraries are available to all students and members of<br />

the faculty of the University.<br />

The Photographic Department , in the Powell Library Building , offers complete<br />

documentary photographic service, where photostats , microfilms, slides,<br />

ozalid prints, and other photographic work are done. A service for the rapid<br />

photocopying of periodical articles and portions of books is available in the<br />

University Research Library, the College Library , the Biomedical Library, the<br />

Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Library, the Chemistry Library, and the<br />

Law Library. Self-service copiers are available for use in several Library units.<br />

A Library handbook, describing the organization and services of the University<br />

libraries and listing their schedules of hours, may be obtained in any of the<br />

campus libraries.<br />

Supplementing the University Library is the William Andrews Clark Memorial<br />

Library of about 75,000 books, pamphlets, and manuscripts, featuring English<br />

culture of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries, and the history<br />

of Montana. Materials in the library do not circulate. The Clark Library sponsors<br />

an annual program of summer postdoctoral fellowships. The areas of study<br />

are based on the particular strengths of the Library's holdings . Each year a<br />

Clark Library Fellowship is granted to a <strong>UCLA</strong> graduate student working<br />

toward a doctorate within one of the Library 's fields of interest and each year<br />

also an eminent scholar is brought to the Library as its Senior Research Fellow.<br />

This library is not on the University campus, but is situated at 2520 Cimarron<br />

Street, at West Adams Boulevard.<br />

Bus service is provided Monday through Friday, upon request, from the<br />

<strong>UCLA</strong> campus to the Clark Library. Reservations for bus service must be made<br />

with the Administrative Office before noon of the preceding day, and before<br />

noon on Friday for Monday transportation to Clark Library. The Library is<br />

open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Leaflets describing the<br />

Clark Library are available upon application to the University Librarian.<br />

SPECIAL RESEARCH FACILITIES<br />

Recognizing the value of an interdisciplinary approach to the search for<br />

knowledge, the University maintains organized research units outside the usual<br />

departmental structure . Organized research units aid research and may enhance<br />

the teaching of participating members of the faculty, but they do not offer<br />

regular academic curricula or confer degrees. They may provide research training<br />

to graduate students employed in research programs with faculty supervision.<br />

Organized research units are designated as institutes, centers, projects,<br />

bureaus, nondepartmental laboratories, stations and museums . While the objectives<br />

and fields of study vary widely, and institute is organized around a broad<br />

subject area which cuts across department , school , college or even campus<br />

boundaries . A center may be an agency established within an institute covering<br />

a major area, or it may be separate and provide specialized facilities . A bureau<br />

is an academic agency engaged primarily in public service activities and in
