<strong>UCLA</strong>.<br />

MASTER OF SOCIAL WELFARE<br />

The degree of Master of Social Welfare will be granted upon fufillment of<br />

the following requirements:<br />

1. The candidate shall have fulfilled the general requirements of the Graduate<br />

Division and the University.<br />

2. The candidate shall have satisfactorily completed the School's prescribed<br />

program of classroom and field instruction, in either the Social Casew&k or<br />

Community Organization curriculum concentration. This includes satisfactory<br />

completion of the required courses in the Research sequence and of a research<br />

project to be undertaken during the second year of study.<br />

3. The candidate shall have achieved a minimum grade average of B in academic<br />

courses and in field instruction.<br />

4. The candidate shall have spent a minimum of one year (three quarters) of<br />

study in residence at <strong>UCLA</strong>.<br />

5. The candidate shall have satisfactorily passed a comprehensive final examination<br />

in the field of social welfare.<br />

DOCTOR OF SOCIAL WELFARE DEGREE<br />

The School of Social Welfare offers a doctoral program leading to the degree<br />

of D.S.W. (Doctor of Social Welfare). The program is designed to prepare<br />

students for careers in policy development, administrative positions related to<br />

social welfare, practice, research, and teaching. The curriculum is organized<br />

into the following major areas: Social welfare policy and planning; research;<br />

social welfare among and in different countries, with special emphasis on Latin<br />

America; methods of social work practice; and, "grass roots" and neighborhood<br />

organization for disadvantaged groups. Programs of study are planned in<br />

relation to the special interests of students.<br />

Admission requirements include meeting the general admission standards of<br />

the Graduate Division, and an M.S.W. from an accredited School of Social<br />

Work. Students possessing a Master's degree in social science may also be<br />

admitted under a plan which involves a period of study in the M.S.W. program<br />

to provide the necessary foundation in the distinctive subject matter of the<br />

profession. The length and nature of the program is to be determined by the<br />

Doctoral Committee in relation to the special needs of students. Enrollment in<br />

the doctoral program is limited, and it may not be possible to accept all applicants<br />

who meet the formal qualifications for admission.<br />
