Residence<br />

All doctoral candidates will be required to engage in six or more quarters of<br />

full-time resident study. Full-time resident study consists of enrollment in one<br />

or more courses during a quarter . Three of these full-time resident quarters<br />

must be taken consecutively . Continuous enrollment is required of all doctoral<br />

candidates.<br />

Candidates for the Ph .D. degree are allowed a period of time not to exceed<br />

four years from the beginning of course work to advancement to candidacy,<br />

and four additional years from advancement to candidacy , to completion of the<br />

dissertation . Petitions for extension of time must be approved by the candidate's<br />

sponsor and by the Committee on Graduate Admissions and Standards.<br />

Qualifying Examinations<br />

When the candidate has completed the course work recommended by his<br />

guidance committee , he applies for the written qualifying examinations in his<br />

field in education and in his cognate department . The examinations are given<br />

under the direction of the Committee on Graduate Admissions and Standards of<br />

the School of Education.<br />

Upon successful completion of the written qualifying examinations, the candidate<br />

formulates a dissertation proposal with the aid of his chairman and a<br />

dissertation committee . The committee consists of three members of the faculty<br />

in education , two in the cognate department , and one from the University at<br />

large. The committee is nominated by the Department of Education and<br />

appointed by the Dean of the Graduate Division . The dissertation committee<br />

conducts an oral examination on topics from both education and the cognate<br />

discipline related to the candidate 's research proposal, designed to determine<br />

the candidate 's qualifications to conduct meaningful research in the field.<br />

Advancement to Candidacy<br />

The candidate who has passed both the written and oral qualifying examinations,<br />

as well as the language examination, files an application for advancement<br />

to candidacy . Thereafter he enrolls each quarter in Education 599, or for such<br />

course/courses; as his chairman may direct , or until the dissertation is completed.<br />

The dissertation embodies the results of the candidate 's independent investigation.<br />

It must contribute to the body of theoretical knowledge in education,<br />

and must draw upon the interrelations of education and the cognate discipline.<br />

In preparing the dissertation, the candidate is guided by his dissertation committee.<br />

Approval of the dissertation by the committee and the Graduate Council<br />

is required before be is recommended for the degree.<br />

A manual of instruction for the preparation and submission of the dissertation<br />

may be secured from the Graduate Division or from the Office of the University<br />

Archivist. The manuscript adviser in the Office of the University Archivist must<br />

approve the format of each dissertation before it is accepted by the Graduate<br />

Division. Before preparing the final document, candidates are urged to attend<br />

an orientation meeting conducted by the manuscript adviser in the Office of
