and (2) students preparing to teach social science in the secondary schools. These<br />

students should govern their programs primarily by the preparation requirements<br />

of the professional school or teaching credential of their choice.<br />

Preparation . Political Science 1 and 2. History 1A-1B-1C , or any three courses<br />

selected from History 8, 9A-9B - 9C-9D . Economics 1 and 2, or 100. Sociology<br />

1 or 101 . Anthropology 22 or 100 . One course selected from Geography.lB,<br />

l0A-lOB-bOC,101.<br />

Upper division. The political science major should be completed as follows:<br />

Political Science 110, 120 , 121, 141 , 150; two additional courses from Group II,<br />

International Relations (courses 123 to 139 ); one course from Group N, Comparative<br />

Government (152 to 169 ); one course from 115 , 146, 188A.<br />

Other social sciences courses required : Economics 180, 190 ; Geography 140;<br />

History 141F-141G, 178A-178B; Sociology 140.<br />

Language requirement: completion of the sixth quarter course (or its equivalent,<br />

as prescribed by the language department ), with a grade of C or better, of<br />

any modem foreign language. French 6, German 6, Spanish 25, Russian 6,<br />

are most frequently offered in fulfillment of this requirement, but see also the<br />

offerings listed under Portuguese , Italian, Germanic Languages , Near Eastern<br />

and African Languages, and Oriental Languages. Chinese, French , German,<br />

Russian and Spanish , are the languages of widest career utility in international<br />

affairs.<br />

Area Focus. Students are advised but not required to concentrate their political<br />

science, geography, history and language courses so as to achieve broad<br />

familiarity with one area such as Latin America, Africa , the Atlantic area, the<br />

Soviet sphere , East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, or the Middle East.<br />

Major in Earth Physics and Exploration Geophysics<br />

This major is designed to provide training in the physical sciences that are<br />

basic to geophysics. The requirements of geophysical companies and the, demands<br />

of educational and research institutions indicate the desirability of broad<br />

training in the physical sciences for those who intend to enter either applied<br />

geophysics or earth physics . Two options are provided below: the first is<br />

designed for students interested in exploration geophysics, the second for those<br />

intending to undertake graduate study in geology, geophysics, planetary physics,<br />

or space science.<br />

OPTION I. EXPLORATION GEOPHYSICS<br />

Preparation for the Major. Chemistry IA-1B-1C ; Geology 1; Mathematics<br />

11A-11B-11C, 12A-12B-12C; Physics 7A-7B-7C-7D.<br />

The Major. Required: Geology 1O1A- 1O1B- 1O1C or 111A-111B - 111C, 136;<br />

Physics 105A, 110A, 114; Physics 131A or Mathematics 145A.
