The courses indicated may be taken at the University of California or elsewhere.<br />

The list of courses and their descriptions may be used by prospective<br />

transfer students as a guide in selecting courses of similar content and purpose<br />

offered in their own institutions . Students attending a California junior college<br />

should consult their counselors to determine which junior college courses are<br />

appropriate and are accepted in satisfaction of the breadth requirements by the<br />

College of Fine Arts.<br />

ENGLISH COMPOSITION<br />

One course in English composition (English 1) with a grade of "C" or better,<br />

taken at <strong>UCLA</strong> or transferred from another institution , is required of all students.<br />

This course may not be taken for a Pass/ Not Pass grade. Individual<br />

departments may require additional evidence of writing ability (English 2 or<br />

the equivalent) as part of the preparation for the major.<br />

This requirement may also be met by a score of 4 or 5 in the College Entrance<br />

Examination Board's Advanced Placement Test in English , or by passing a<br />

proficiency examination in English composition set and administered by the<br />

Department of English . To be eligible for this proficiency examination an<br />

entering student must have a score of 700 on the CEEB English Achievement<br />

Test with a verbal score of 675 on the CEEB Scholastic Aptitude Test , or must<br />

have the endorsement of his major department based on evidence of superior<br />

writing ability in a departmental course . Transfer students who have completed<br />

with a grade of "C" or better a college composition course not evaluated as<br />

English 1, may request permission from the English Department to take this<br />

proficiency examination . Eligible students must register for the examination<br />

in the English Department office prior to the day of enrollment in any quarter.<br />

A foreign student whose entire secondary school work was completed in his<br />

native tongue, excluding English , may satisfy this requirement with English<br />

33C if completed with a grade of "C" or better.<br />

FOREIGN LANGUAGE , NATURAL SCIENCE, SOCIAL SCIENCE AND HUMANITIES<br />

Thirteen courses (52 units) chosen from these four areas, including at least<br />

three courses (12 units ) in one foreign language , and at least three courses<br />

(12 units) in each of two other areas. Any course applied on one of these four<br />

general requirements may not also be applied on another of these requirements.<br />

At least three courses in one foreign language are required of all students.<br />

All courses in foreign language , except foreign literature in English translation,<br />

may be applied to this requirement.<br />

Without reducing the total number of units required for the bachelor 's degree,<br />

high school foreign language work with grades of "C" or better and not duplicated<br />

by college work will count as follows: the first two years together equal<br />

two college courses, and the third and fourth years each equal one college<br />

course. No more than the equivalent of three college foreign language courses<br />

taken at the high school level will count toward the required thirteen courses.<br />
