REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION / 27<br />

to balance a C in another; but an A grade may not be used to compensate for<br />

any grade below C. Grades, including those earned in accelerated and advanced<br />

courses, are accepted as they appear on the high school transcript.<br />

Courses taken in the ninth year or earlier in which a grade below C is received<br />

may be repeated to establish subject credit.<br />

Courses taken after the ninth year in which a grade of D or F is received<br />

may be repeated to establish subject credit and to improve scholarship. Courses<br />

may be repeated in an amount not to exceed a total of two semesters of the<br />

required subjects. Grades earned in such repetitions will not be counted higher<br />

than a C in determining the scholarship average.<br />

Examination Requirement<br />

As a requirement for admission, all freshman applicants must submit scores<br />

from the following examinations of the College Entrance Examination Board:<br />

1. The Scholastic Aptitude Test<br />

2. Three Achievement Tests, which must include:<br />

a. English composition<br />

b. social studies or foreign language<br />

c. mathematics or science<br />

Applicants whose scholarship average in the required high school subjects<br />

is 3.00 to 3.09 inclusive must achieve a total score of 2500 or higher on the<br />

examinations. The test results of all applicants will be used for purposes of<br />

counseling , placement, and, when possible, satisfaction of the Subject A requirement.<br />

The tests should be taken after completion of the first half of the eleventh<br />

ADMISSION BY EXAMINATION ALONE<br />

An applicant who does not meet the scholarship and subject requirements for<br />

admission and who has not registered in any college-level institution (except for<br />

a summer session immediately following high school graduation) may qualify<br />

for admission by examination alone. For admission of nonresident applicants by<br />

this method, see page 29.<br />

To qualify, the applicant must achieve high scores in the examinations required<br />

of all eligible applicants. The total score on the Scholastic Aptitude<br />

Test must be at least 1100; the scores on the three Achievement Tests must<br />

total at least 1650, and the score on each must be at least 500.<br />

To obtain information about the tests or to make arrangements for taking<br />

them, apply to Educational Testing Service, P. O. Box 1025, Berkeley, California<br />

94701, or P. O. Box 592, Princeton, New Jersey 08540. Scores will be regarded<br />

as official only if they are received by the Admissions Office directly from Educational<br />

Testing Service.
