legoirements for the Ph.D. Degree<br />

1. For general requirements , see page 159.<br />

2. Requirements for the Master 's degree in<br />

the department or its equivalent must be met<br />

for admission to the program (see Requirements<br />

for the M.A. Degree ). A student admitted<br />

with a M.A. degree or advanced<br />

graduate standing from another institution<br />

will not automatically be exempted from any<br />

part of our graduate program. He may be required<br />

to submit a brief research paper showing<br />

his ability to conduct original research<br />

and his aptitude in communicating his findings.<br />

3. All students must present either Chinese<br />

or Japanese language and literature as a<br />

major in any program and will complete a<br />

minimum of five graduate courses in the<br />

department beyond the M.A. degree.<br />

4. Chinese majors will present evidence of<br />

successful completion of three courses in<br />

modem Japanese at the intermediate level<br />

6. The student will demonstrate a reading<br />

knowledge of French or German (whichever<br />

was not offered for the M.A. degree) by<br />

passing (minimum score : 500) the Graduate<br />

School Foreign Language Test administered<br />

by the Educational Testing Service, or by<br />

successful completion of a level 5 course<br />

(with a grade of C or better). This requirement<br />

must be met prior to advancement to<br />

candidacy.<br />

7. Pass qualifying examinations in the<br />

major field , the minor field and in East Asian<br />

history and culture . Pass an oral qualifying<br />

examination on the proposed dissertation<br />

topic and in appropriate related areas of<br />

study.<br />

8. Present a dissertation embodying the results<br />

of independent investigation.<br />

hour. (A) A survey of the development of the outstanding<br />

aspects of Chinese culture from prehistoric<br />

to modem times. No knowledge of Chinese required.<br />

(B) A survey of the development of Japanese culture<br />

and its relationship to the Asiatic mainland. No<br />

knowledge of Japanese required.<br />
