In historical musicology, ethnomusicologgyy<br />

and systematic musicology the thesis will be<br />

an extended essay (see pages 158-159). For<br />

students of composition the thesis will be a<br />

composition in a large form. Students in<br />

music education may elect either the Thesis<br />

Plan or the Comprehensive Examination<br />

Plan (see program in Music Education above).<br />

Fhxd Examination<br />

The final examination is oral and includes<br />

both discussion of the thesis and related matters.<br />

Students in music education electing<br />

the Comprehensive Examination Plan will<br />

substitute a comprehensive examination (described<br />

above) for the final examination.<br />

Is ulreaeuts for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree<br />

<strong>General</strong> Requirements. For general requirements<br />

see pages 159-162 . The status of students<br />

in all fields of concentration is provisional<br />

subject to departmental approval of<br />

the Form I Application (Notice of Intention<br />

to Proceed to Candidacy for the Ph.D. degree).<br />

Normally this application is filed at the<br />

end of the first year of residence . Upon approval<br />

of the application, the student may<br />

request that a guidance committee be apted.<br />

The guidance committee will assist<br />

in preparing for the written qualifying<br />

examinations (see below), which are administered<br />

byy the same committee. After successful<br />

completion of the examinations, a doctoral<br />

committee will be appointed. This committee<br />

administers the oral qualifying examination<br />

and also guides the student in writing his<br />

dissertation.<br />

Language Requirement. A reading knowledge<br />

of French and German is required in<br />

systematic musicology, ethnomusicology and<br />

music education ; of French, German and a<br />

third language approved by the Council in<br />

historical musicology. Students in the field<br />

of composition will elect two languages from<br />

German, French , Italian , Russian , or Latin.<br />

Grse of Study<br />

Each student must plan his program under<br />

the guidance of the graduate adviser in his<br />

field of concentration. Course requirements<br />

for each field of concentration are as follows:<br />

1. Historical musicology: 200A, 200B, 210,<br />

211, five terms of 260 and one seminar from<br />

250, 256, 257, 259, 266 or 269. Students who<br />

have received the M.A. in historical musicology<br />

from <strong>UCLA</strong> will normally take a minimma<br />

of.three terms of 260 in the Ph.D. pro-<br />

gram. Students may complete their residence<br />

requirements by electing courses from the<br />

100-200 series listed under the general requirements<br />

for the M.A., upon recommendation<br />

of their adviser.<br />

2. Systematic musicology : 200A, 200B,<br />

269, five terms of 2<strong>72</strong> and one term of 273<br />

or 275 . Students who have received the M.A.<br />

in systematic musicology from <strong>UCLA</strong> will<br />

normally take a minimum of three terms of<br />

2<strong>72</strong> in the Ph.D. program. Students may complete<br />

their residence requirements by electing<br />

courses from the 100-200 series listed<br />

under the general requirements for the M.A.,<br />

upon recommendation of their adviser.<br />

3. Ethnomusicology: 190A, 190B, 200A,<br />

200B , and a minimum of six terms of 280,<br />

part of which may be completed at the M.A.<br />

level. Students may complete their residence<br />

requirements by electing courses from the<br />

100-200 series listed under the general requirements<br />

for the M.A., upon recommendation<br />

of their adviser.<br />

4. Composition: 200A , five terms of 252,<br />

and three terms of 249, 251 or 256 . Students<br />

who have received the M.A. in composition<br />

from <strong>UCLA</strong> will normally take a minimum<br />

of three terms of 251 or 252 in the Ph.D.<br />

program. Students may complete their residence<br />

requirements by electing courses from<br />

the 100- 200 series listed under the general<br />

requirements for the M.A., upon recommendation<br />

of their adviser.<br />

5. Music Education: 184, 185, 200A, 200B,<br />

274, and five terms of 270 . Students who<br />

have received the M.A. in music education<br />

from <strong>UCLA</strong> will normally take a minimum<br />

of three terms of 270 in the Ph.D. program.<br />

Students may complete their residence requirements<br />

by electing courses from the 100-<br />

200 series listed under the general requirements<br />

for the M.A., upon recommendation<br />

of their adviser.<br />

Examinations<br />

Before he is admitted to candidacy, the<br />

student must pass a series of qualifying examinations;<br />

after he has completed his dissertation<br />

he must pass a final examination, concerned<br />

primarily with the dissertation. The<br />

qualifying examinations are both written and<br />

oral.<br />

In the fields of Historical Musicology,<br />

Ethnomusicology and Music Education the<br />

written examinations consist of the following:<br />

(a) history of musical les in Western civilization<br />

(three hours); (b) analysis of form and<br />

style (three hours); (c) an examination to<br />

demonstrate a basic knowledge of music in
