undergraduate preparation in folklore may<br />

continue their work on the graduate level.<br />

The program leading to the degree of<br />

Master of Arts in Folklore and Mythology is<br />

pean Studies 260A 260B ; Music 255, 280;<br />

Russian 291; Spanish 262A-262B.<br />

administered by the inter-departmental Committee<br />

on Folklore and Mythology. It is open<br />

to students desiring a knowledge of the materials<br />

of folklore and mythology and the<br />

theoretical bases and techniques of research.<br />

Students completing the degree may continue<br />

folklore study in conjunction with a program<br />

leading to a degree in an allied field.<br />

Also required is a written examination<br />

requiring comprehensive knowledge of (1)<br />

the theoretical bases, major documents, and<br />

techniques of folklore study ; (2) the major<br />

forms of folklore; and (3) either mythology,<br />

a single form of folklore or the folklore and<br />

mythology of a selected society or culture<br />

area.<br />

Admission to the Program. In addition to<br />

meeting the requirements of the Graduate<br />

Division, the students should have (1) an<br />

LB. degree preferably in a field of the humanities<br />

or social sciences and (2) Folklore<br />

101 and M105 or their equivalents . Upon admission<br />

to graduate status the student<br />

should consult the Chairman of the Folklore<br />

and Mythology Group.<br />

Thesis Plan. An acceptable thesis written<br />

under the direction of a member of the Folklore<br />

and Mythology Group and an oral examination<br />

in the field of the thesis ; a minimum<br />

of nine courses (including course 598)<br />

chosen from courses in the Folklore and<br />

Mythology Group , at least five of which must<br />

be in the 200 series.<br />

Comprehensive Examination Plan. A minimum<br />

of nine courses chosen from the courses<br />

<strong>General</strong> Requirements. As throughout the<br />

Graduate Division ; see page 155.<br />

Language Requirements. A reading knowledge<br />

of a foreign language (French or German<br />

unless another language is approved by<br />

the Chairman).<br />

Program. All candidates, whether electing<br />

the Thesis Plan or the Comprehensive Examination<br />

Plan, must complete the following:<br />

Folklore 200, 201A- 201B, 216; Classics 161<br />

or Indo-European Studies 140; and at least<br />

we course chosen from each of the following<br />

groups:<br />

Group 1. Folklore M106, 142, M144,<br />

in the Folklore and Mythology Group, at least<br />

five of which must be in the 200 series; an<br />

oral examination covering the field of the<br />

written examination.<br />

Through its member departments the<br />

Folklore and Mythology Group also offers a<br />

variety of course work leading to the M.A.<br />

and Ph.D. degrees. Financial aid and research<br />

opportunities are available to qqualified<br />

graduate students in the form of fellowships,<br />

research assistantships , teaching assistantships<br />

, and collecting stipendia. For<br />

further information, students should consult<br />
