Students intending to major in French<br />

must consult the appropriate major adviser<br />

before registering for French courses in the<br />

upper division.<br />

The liners Programs in French<br />

Majors with a 3.0 grade-point average and<br />

a 3.0 overall average will be eligible to applyfor<br />

the Honors Program in French. Stu-<br />

ts will be informed of their eligibility<br />

near the end of their junior year and should<br />

make application at that time if they wish<br />

to enter the program. Applications should<br />

include: (1) a letter in French describing the<br />

student 's field of interest in French literature<br />

and culture; (2) the student's final examination<br />

in French 101A or 114A or a term paper<br />

from another French course. If these<br />

materials meet with the Committee's approval<br />

, the student will be called for an interview.<br />

Students admitted to the program<br />

will enroll in French 140A- 140B- 140C. In<br />

140A and 140B the student will devote his<br />

time to the study of some special aspect of<br />

French literature and will select a topic for<br />

his senior essay. The third quarter (140C)<br />

will be devoted to the writing of the essay<br />

under the tutorial guidance of the instructor.<br />

No regular class meetings will be scheduled<br />

for the Honors Course except the first<br />

meeting.<br />

Credential<br />

Consult the <strong>UCLA</strong> ANNOUNCEMENT OF<br />

nus GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EnucATION. At the<br />

discretion of the Department an examination<br />

will be given preparatory to recommendation<br />

for the certificate of completion for the<br />

Standard Elementary, or the Standard<br />

Secondary Teaching Credential . Should the<br />

Department direct that these examinations<br />

be given, they will be held on the first Thursday<br />

after January 1 and the third Thursday<br />

in May. They must be passed before the<br />

Department will recommend that the student<br />

take his practice teaching.<br />

Wirements for the Master 's Degree<br />

The Department offers two alternative<br />

programs: Plan A designed for teachers of<br />

French at the secondary and junior college<br />

levels, and Plan B leading<br />

French.<br />

For all candidates for the M.A. in French,<br />

the foreign language requirement will be fulfilled<br />

by passing a course of at least level 3<br />

in either German, Spanish, Italian or Latin<br />

or by passing the University reading examination<br />

in one of these languages. In special<br />

cases, substitution of another foreign language<br />

will be accepted, if approved by the<br />

Chairman of the Department . Students are<br />

required to pass the reading requirement in<br />

one of the foreign languages before taking<br />

the M.A. examination . All candidates for<br />

the M.A. must satisfy the Department as<br />

to their proficiency in spoken French. (2)<br />

Course requirements: Plan A: At least 12<br />

courses in French including the following<br />

courses : 370-495.<br />

All entering graduate students will take a<br />

departmental examination to determine<br />

whether they will be required to take French<br />

201A and/or 201B.<br />

French 310A and 310B, or 370 and 495<br />

will be required of all graduate students before<br />

advancement to candidacy for the first<br />

graduate degree or Ph.D. This requirement<br />

may be satisfied by certain categories of previous<br />

full-time teaching experience, or by<br />

service as a Teaching Assistant in the French<br />

Department. It is the responsibility of the<br />

student to determine his status with regard<br />

to this requirement with his adviser.<br />

In addition the student will take seven<br />

courses in literature in three out of five fields<br />

(16th- 20th centuries ). To meet general University<br />

requirements , at least six courses must<br />

be of graduate level . The comprehensive examination<br />

will consist of a written examination<br />

in the three fields prepared, a sight<br />

translation from English to French (from<br />

French to English in the case of students<br />

whose native language is French ), a literary<br />

composition in French (in the modem field<br />

only ) of not less than two hours , an explication<br />

de texte and an oral examination in<br />

French covering a topic previously prepared<br />

by the candidate . At the discretion of the Department<br />

a candidate may be permitted to<br />

take this examination a second time, but under<br />

no circumstances is a third trial allowed.<br />

Plan B : At least 12 courses in French including<br />

the following courses: 310A and<br />

310B , or 370 and 495 are also required under<br />

Plan B but may be waived similarly.<br />

In addition the student will take nine courses<br />

in literature in three out of six fields defined<br />

as follows: Middle Ages, Renaissance<br />

and Baroque , Classicism , 18th century, 19th<br />

century, 20th century. For students specializing<br />
