DISSERTATION<br />

Each candidate is required to present a<br />

dissertation on a subject chosen by him of<br />

such character as to show a thorough mastery<br />

of the sources of information , the ability to<br />

carry on independent research and to communicate<br />

its results in good literary form.<br />

In lieu of the customary type of dissertation,<br />

a student may in certain cases edit , or translate<br />

and edit, some historical source. Such a<br />

project involves careful textual criticism, explanatory<br />

annotations , and an historical introduction<br />

clearly showing the contribution<br />

of the source to historical knowledge. The<br />

dissertation must be completed within five<br />

years of the qualifying examinations. Any<br />

extension of this period must be secured annually<br />
