Preparation for the Major<br />

Required courses: Russian 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,<br />

Slavic 99A-99B . Note : courses Russian 119<br />

and 120A- 120B may be taken in the sophomore<br />

year.<br />

The Major<br />

Required courses : Russian 101A-101B-<br />

101C, 119, 120A- 120B , 121, 122, 123; three<br />

courses chosen from Russian 130A-130B-<br />

130C, 140A-140B-1400-140D, 150; one<br />

course chosen from Russian 124A through<br />

124F ; and any three electives chosen from:<br />

Russian 124A -F, 130A-C, 140A-D, 150,<br />

Polish 152A B, Czech 155A-B, Serbocroatian<br />

154A B.<br />

Students intending to continue into graduate<br />

school should note that several graduate<br />

courses (numbered below 220) maybe taken<br />

by qualified seniors with permission of the<br />

instructor and the graduate adviser.<br />

Admission to Graduate Status<br />

The completion of the undergraduate<br />

major or its equivalent is required. Students<br />

entering from other institutions will be asked<br />

to make up any deficiencies before being admitted<br />

to most graduate courses.<br />

Requirements for the Master 's Degree<br />

1. For the general requirements , see pages<br />

156-157. The Department follows the Comprehensive<br />

Examination Plan. The M.A. is<br />

weighted erature, but towards all candidates either Linguistics are expected or Lit to<br />

have a sound general knowledge of both<br />

Russian linguistics and Russian literary history.<br />

2. Application for advancement to candidacy<br />

may be made when the student has<br />

passed the reading examination in French or<br />

German and no later than the second week<br />

of the quarter in which the candidate expects<br />

to take his examinations. The French or German<br />

examination must be passed no later<br />

than the end of the quarter preceding the<br />

quarter in which the candidate expects to<br />

take his examination.<br />

3. Course requirements. Required of all<br />

M.A. candidates : Russian 102A- 102B-102C,<br />

204, 212 and 213 . In addition , candidates<br />

for the M.A. (Linguistics) must take Slavic<br />

201 and 202, and candidates for the M.A.<br />

(Literature ) must take Russian 211 and one<br />

other literature course in the Department.<br />

Note : most of the courses required for the<br />

M.A. are open to qualified seniors with the
