Arts."<br />

Courses numbered in the 200 series are normally reserved for graduate sti<br />

dents only. Undergraduate students who wish to take these courses must pet<br />

tion for advance approval of the department chairman and the Dean of th<br />

College , prior to the deadline dates referred to above . Courses numbered in th<br />

400 and 500 series are not available to undergraduate students in the Colleg<br />

of Fine Arts.<br />

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS<br />

A C average (2.0) is required on all work attempted in the University a<br />

California, exclusive of courses in University Extension and courses attemptei<br />

on a pass/ fail basis. A C average is also required in all upper division course<br />

in the major attempted in the University.<br />

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS<br />

Of the last 45 units completed for the bachelor's degree, 35 must be earned<br />

in the College of Fine Arts . Not more than 18 of these 35 units may be coo<br />

pleted in summer sessions at <strong>UCLA</strong>.<br />

For students transferring from another institution with senior standing, there<br />

is the additional requirement that, of the 35 units to be earned in residence in<br />

the College of Fine Arts , 28 must be upper division, including 16 upper divisioe<br />

units in the major department.<br />

University Extension. Courses in University of California Extension (either<br />

class or correspondence ) may not be offered as part of the residence requirement<br />

Concurrent Enrollment. Concurrent enrollment in courses at another institution<br />

or in University Extension (including correspondence courses ) is permitted only<br />

in extraordinary circumstances , and no credit is given for such courses unles<br />

the approval of the Dean has been obtained by petition prior to enrollment.<br />

SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS<br />

All students complete the specific subject requirements established by the<br />

University , the College of Fine Arts , and the student 's major department.<br />

<strong>General</strong> College Requirements<br />

The general requirements of the College of Fine Arts provide for breadth<br />

in the student 's education , and are planned to insure a degree of basic skill in<br />

communication - both in English and in one foreign language , and to offse<br />

the student an introduction to each of the broad fields of human learning<br />

natural science , social science , and the humanities. It is intended that these<br />

requirements may be spread over the entire undergraduate program, and stu<br />

dents are encouraged to take both lower and upper division courses for the<br />

completion of these requirements.
