- Ouverture
1 - Overture
Le théâtre représente le Lido avec le port de
Palerme en vue. Plusieurs tentes élégantes sont
placées sous l’ombrage des arbres.
Pendant l’introduction on voit arriver à plusieurs
reprises des barques d’où descendent des étrangers.
Scène Première
Robert, Bertram, le chapelain de Robert, Chevaliers,
Valets et Ecuyers.
Au lever du rideau Robert et Bertram sont à une
table à gauche du spectateur ; plusieurs valets et
écuyers sont occupés à les servir. A droite, une
table où plusieurs chevaliers boivent ensemble.
2 Chœur - Versez à tasse pleine,
Versez ces vins fumeux,
Et que l’ivresse amène
L’oubli des soins fâcheux.
Aux seuls plaisirs fidèles,
Consacrons-lui nos jours.
Le vin, le jeu, les belles,
Voilà nos seuls amours.
Premier Chevalier (à droite, regardant Robert) -
Quels nombreux écuyers ! quelles armes brillantes !
Alberti - Quel est cet étranger,
ce seigneur opulent,
Dont les tentes élégantes
S’élèvent près de notre camp ?
Qui l’amène en Sicile ?
Premier Chevalier - Il y vient, j’imagine,
Pour assister comme nous aux tournois
Que donne le duc de Messine.
Robert (le verre à la main, s’adressant aux chevaliers) -
Illustres chevaliers, c’est à vous que je bois !

Numerous tents are pitched
under the shade of trees.
During the introduction several boats are seen
reaching the shore; foreigners disembark.
Scene I
Robert, Bertram, Robert’s attendant, knights,
servants and squires.
The curtain rises to reveal Robert and Bertram sitting
at a table on the left of the audience; several valets
and squires attend to them. On the right, a table at
which many knight are drinking together.
2 Chorus - Let’s fill the cup
with generous wine:
let drunkenness make us
oblivious to all troubles.
Let’s spend our days
in merry pleasure.
Wine, gambling, fair women,
be our only concerns.
First knight (to the right, looking at Robert) -
How many squires! What beautiful arms!
Alberti - Who is that foreigner,
that rich gentleman,
whose elegant tents
have been pitched near our camp?
What brings him to Sicily?
First knight - He’s come, I imagine,
to take part, like us, in the tournament
organised by the Duke of Messina.
Robert (raising his cup, to the knights) -
Noble knights, I drink to your health!
