O ciel ! c’est fait de nous !
Bertram - Console-toi,
Fais comme moi,
Plus de dépit ;
Car tu l’as dit :
“ L’or est une chimère,
“ Sachons nous en servir :
“ Le vrai bien sur la terre
“ N’est-il pas le plaisir ? ”
Robert (frappant sur la table) -
Et mes chevaux et mes armures !
C’est tout ce qui nous reste, et je veux l’exposer.
Bertram - Et tu fais bien ;
le sort contre qui tu murmures
N’attend que ce moment pour nous favoriser.
Robert (amenant les dés) - Seize !
Bertram - Quel bonheur ! tu vois bien…
Les Chevaliers (amenant les dés) - Dix-huit !
Robert - O ciel ! je n’ai plus rien !
Bertram - Ami, console-toi !
Robert - Dans mon destin funeste
Je t’entraîne avec moi !
Bertram - Notre amitié nous reste.
Robert (abattu) -
Mes armes, mes coursiers ne m’appartiennent plus.
(à Bertram)
Va leur livrer les biens que j’ai perdus.
(Bertram sort avec quelques chevalier)
Ensemble
11 Robert - Malheur sans égal,
D’un sort infernal
L’ascendant fatal
Me poursuit, m’opprime ;
Craignez mon courroux !
Je puis sur vous tous
Me venger des coups
Dont je suis victime.
O heaven! We’re done for!
Bertram - Take heart,
follow my example,
don’t lose your temper;
you said it yourself:
“ Gold is an illusion,
“ we must make the right use of it:
“ isn’t pleasure
“ the best thing on this earth? ”
Robert (banging his fist on the table) -
There’s still my horses and my arms!
They’re all that’s left to me, and I’ll wager them
Bertram - You do well;
that luck against which you’re grumbling
is only waiting for this moment to favour us.
Robert (throwing the dice) - Sixteen!
Bertram - Great! You see…
Knights (throwing the dice) - Eighteen!
Robert - O heaven! I have nothing left!
Bertram - My friend, take heart!
Robert - I’ve dragged you with me
to my fatal destiny!
Bertram - We still have our friendship.
Robert (downcast) -
My arms, my horses, no longer belong to me.
(to Bertram)
Go and give them what is theirs.
(Bertram leaves with some knights)
Ensemble
11 Robert - Utter misfortune,
the evil influence
of an infernal fate
pursues me, prevails on me;
Beware of my wrath!
I could avenge upon you all
the blows
of which I am a victim.
