Alice - tremblante.

Alice (bas à Robert) - Qu’il ressemble…

Robert (bas) - Quelle folie !
(haut)
allez, et qu’un hymen heureux
ce soir, mes bons amis, vous unisse tous deux !
(Alice baise la main de Robert et sort)
Scène VI
Robert, Bertram.
Bertram - Quoi ! tous deux les unir !
à merveille ! courage !
Ta nouvelle conquête est fort bien avec toi…
Robert - Oui, par reconnaissance.
Bertram - Ah ! crois donc ce langage,
C’est le mot de tous les ingrats.
Robert - Bertram, tu ne la connais pas !
Tais-toi, je crains ta funeste influence.
En moi j’ai deux penchants :
l’un qui me porte au bien,
Naguère encor j’en sentais la puissance ;
L’autre me porte au mal, et tu n’épargnes rien
Pour l’éveiller en moi.
Bertram - Que dis-tu ? quel délire !
Quoi ! tu peux te méprendre au motif qui m’inspire ?
Tu doutes de mon cœur ?
Robert - Non, non, tu me chéris,
Je le crois.
Bertram - Oui, Robert, cent fois plus
