dussé-je périr sous leurs coups,
Isabelle, j’attends mon sort à tes genoux.
O ciel !… Robert ! Robert !
Ensemble
Chœur - Arrêtons, saisissons ce guerrier téméraire ;
Mon cœur ne connaît pas une crainte vulgaire ;
Au destin qui l’attend rien ne peut le soustraire ;
Vainement il brave leur colère ;
If I must die under their blows,
Isabelle, I’ll await my fate at your feet.
(He breaks the sprig)
8 Chorus (gradually awaking and stirring) -
What a strage thing!… Was it a spell?
What was this torpidity that immobilized us?
A strange slumber!… Where are we?
That sorcery has troubled my heart,
and makes my reason stray.
What do I see? O heaven!… Robert! Robert!
Ensemble
Chorus - Arrest him, seize that daring knight;
in vain will he try to escape us.
Nothing can save him from his fate
and tomorrow will dawn on his doom.
Robert - Approach, I laugh at your vain wrath,
let lightning struck me here before your eyes,
my heart does not know undignified fear;
it boldly defies both heaven and earth.
Isabelle - It is for me
that he faces their wrath,
alas! And I cannot rescue him from their grasp!
Nothing can save him from his fate
and tomorrow will dawn on his doom.
Alice and Raimbaut -
He faces their wrath in vain;
nothing, alas! Can rescue him from their grasp.
Nothing can save him from his fate
and tomorrow will dawn on his doom.
(The men hurl themselves on Robert
and arrest him, while Isabelle falls unconscious
on her bed; the maids rush to her and Alice,
on her knees and supported by Raimbaut,
appears to be praying for Robert).
