The only way of taking this into account is by looking at specific data on incineration of electronic
devices, taking into account the amount of bromine and chlorine. The model we have is based on
elementary composition. When recycling plastics, we didn’t take that into account. Producers of
secondary plastic need only look at the composition of the material.
I mentioned that a screening LCA can lead to a full LCA which is more detailed and complies with ISO
standards, and also means going through a peer review panel to review the study. RECYCLE asked
us to do a full LCA but there are still some gaps in our LCA. A screening LCA is often enough to
identify hotspots though sometimes companies might want to know more. It’s perfectly acceptable to
start with a screening LCA and, then if necessary, extend it.
